MIFA’s main activity is sponsoring an exchange of our Monroe County high school students with those from our most active sister city, Hofu, Yamaguchi, Japan. We've been exchanging students since 1992 with over 240 students. We are marking the 25th year anniversary in 2018.
Students are selected by being interviewed by Mayor of Monroe and other community leaders. Normally, 5 students will be selected for this program.
Selected students will stay in Hofu, Yamaguchi for three weeks, participating in numerous cultural activities during the week and stay with their host families on the weekends. At the same time, Monroe welcomes students from Hofu. Host families in Hofu and Monroe open their homes and hearts to the students, establishing what often turns out to be lifelong friendships.
